The View From Mount Washington

A Look At Pittsburgh- Through My Lens

This was taken last February from Mount Washington  it was a really windy over cast day and pretty chilly.  The city is full of bridges, great architecture and photo op’s abound. I wasn’t as good at photography then as I feel I am now…. I can’t wait to revisit this same spot one day in the future, to  try and create an even better version of this shot.  The City Of Bridges, The Steel City, Pittsburgh whichever you prefer this city is full of really neat things and places. On our trip we had the opportunity to visit the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium which is very large and quite nice with lots of cool exhibits and animals.

The above photo was taken with a Canon T2i and a kit lens handheld and later edited with Photomatix Pro to create the HDR version. The view is spectacular and you can see for miles and miles!

Crazy Weather In Virginia

Man the weather sure has been weird lately…. a mixture of snow, 70 degree days, more snow, 6″ of rain and more snow….  I’m really not sure what to think about all of this. But on the photography side of things it has allowed me some warm days to get out and capture some sunsets and sunrises. After the first snow storm I went out to capture the sunrise with the fresh snow on the ground and sticking to the tree limbs the final image was one of the best so far in 2013 and was featured on the front page of the Salem Times Register on February 7, 2013.

URBEX Exhibit At The O. Winston Link Museum Roanoke,VA

By | Canon T2i, HDR Photography, Photography | No Comments

The O. Winston Link Museum in downtown Roanoke,VA is displaying the work of 10 local photographers in the new URBex ( Urban Exploration) exhibit.  I was lucky enough to have one of my Photographs chosen to be on display thanks to the Exposure Roanoke Group. My picture on display is one that I took under the Walnut St. bridge during sunset, the sky had some amazing colors and it’s an HDR image I created using multiple exposures and edited in Lightroom and Photomatix Pro. I’m currently working on a series of tutorials for how I do my HDR photographs and also some presets I will have for sale shortly for Lightroom 4. Here’s the picture that’s hanging up and if you get a chance to stop by you should check out the museum!

Shooting HDR With The Canon 6D

By | Canon 6D, HDR Photography | No Comments

We had some great weather this past weekend which allowed me to get out in downtown Roanoke,VA and shoot some HDR photographs with my Canon 6D. I have yet to use the in camera HDR function and have continued my normal 5 exposure routine using my Promote Control with the 6D. The results I think were great but I will let my audience and fans decide on that one.

Which brings me to another point Photography in general seems to be a funny thing… in my views you have two types of photographers  the ones who live and die by the golden rules of Photography.  These people always follow the holy grail like  the rules of thirds, most of these dislike HDR photographs  etc. Then there are Photographers like myself who create not to impress other Photographers but to create images for the pure sense of creation, or maybe it’s an experiment to try something a different way. I try to create images that will grab a users attention whether that be by using lots of color saturation or HDR to make usual scenes seem unusual.  If we all followed the same rules and thoughts… what would be the difference in photographs? The angle something was shot at? The camera that was used to capture the image? My advice to anyone in photography is to create what you WANT to create, yes there are rules for photography and if you break these rules you may be frowned upon by some, but don’t let that influence your vision. Create for your audience be it big or small, push yourself harder with each shot or each edit, and don’t be afraid to try new techniques!

Sports Photography Using HDR Composite Images

By | Canon 6D, Composite Photography, HDR Photography, Photography | One Comment

Well as promised I will be doing more portraits this year, my thinking was to combine my art work with people to create one of a kind images that you can’t get from just anyone.  Sports Photography will be one thing that I’m going to push towards allowing your kids or athletes to become superstars by turning up the normal sports photographs a few notches. Here’s an example using my son Alex as a model and baseball as the sport. The HDR background was taken at a local baseball field the kids used this past season. Then the model or subject photograph is taken in a studio setting but this could be taken anywhere using a solid background and with enough space using soft boxes and speed lights.  If you have any questions about my work or if you’re interested in having portraits like this taken feel free to contact me at NFirebaugh@NFirebaughimages.com .

Big Kid On Christmas Morning

By | Canon 6D, Photography, Virginia | No Comments

So Christmas is finally here! The wait to use my new camera is over 🙂 so like a little kid I ripped it open, hooked up my Promote Control and mounted it on my Slik tripod and out the door I went.  I’ve had this under the tree for almost a month and I was about to bust. Below is a photograph I took of Mill Mountain Star in Roanoke,VA with the new Canon 6D which is my first full frame DSLR. I was bummed when I got home and tried to process my raw files using Photomatix 4.2 because it doesn’t recognize the files yet so the HDR will have to wait until the update comes out.
