A Visit To Bald Head Island

Bald Head Island Is The Place To Be

I finally made it over on to Bald Head Island! Before this trip to the North Carolina coast the closest I had been to Bald Head Island was just across the water on Oak Island. Some of you may have seen the photograph I took from here looking over at Old Baldy. The island is full of beautiful scenery and you get to rent golf carts to ride around in for the day! It has a nice quiet feel complete with beautiful beaches, nature trails, great restaurants and fun for everyone. I can’t wait for my next visit to the island there are still a few things I’d like to do like kayak all the marshes close to the boat house and photograph the birds.

Now here’s a shot I took from the West End of the island of Old Baldy.

The Old Mill – Pigeon Forge, TN

I had a quick visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park a few weeks back… more for relaxation than photography this time around. But I still had my gear with me and managed to shoot a few photographs during the trip. This is one of the Old Mill around sunset while a couple guys were fishing in the water below. The Old Mill is a really neat place to visit if you’re ever in Pigeon Forge Tennessee.

Chasing Waterfalls

I went out with a few photography friends yesterday to spend the day photographing a few waterfalls here in Virginia. Our first stop was at Crabtree Falls located in Nelson County, this set of falls is one to the tallest sets of waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The climb isn’t too bad even though the light we were working with didn’t allow us to hike to the very top. The trail is a pretty clean path and has railings to keep people off the dangerously slick rocks around the falls. I made my way out to a semi safe spot and took this shot looking away from the falls.

Photographing Waterfalls

Yesterday I had the chance to get out and photograph this beautiful 200′ waterfall. Photographing waterfalls usually combines a few things I love hiking (usually to get to the waterfall) and water (I’ve loved fishing since I was a kid).  A few new pieces of gear I tried out during this excursion included the new Mind Shift Panorama 180. I will be writing a full review on this bag once I get to test it out extensively, but so far I love it!.  The second piece of gear was a new tripod setup, which included the Induro AT 214 legs. The tripod legs worked flawless!  Work continues on my Ebook where I will help you take photographs like this of waterfalls stay tuned….

You can find this waterfall near Covington, VA and it’s easily viewable from the overlook. Spring is on it’s way and you will be seeing more photographs like this once warm weather is here to stay.

Looking Up At Currituck Lighthouse

Photographing lighthouses can sometimes be a challenge especially when they are swarming with tourists! Just like this photograph yes you can see some tourists who climbed to the top of the Currituck Lighthouse but at the base there were probably 50 -100 more waiting their turn.  I walked around looking for an angle to shoot and try to limit the number of people in a shot. This is one of the shots I came up with framing the lighthouse in the lush trees. I’m so ready for spring time the cold dreary weather has hampered my photography lately and it’s getting a little frustrating. So here’s to warm weather!!!

Photo Share – Cattle Sunrise

It was another cold and windy morning when I took this photograph on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Devil’s Backbone.  The cattle were out and about in the 20mph wind and 30 degree temperature, they didn’t seem to mind the weather or that I was photographing them.

This one was taken with the Canon 6D using the 17-40mm F4L F16 and ISO 100, to create 7 exposures which were edited using Photomatix and Google NIK Collection. When working in the wind there are a few things to remember make sure your tripod is sound and secure. Use the hook to add some extra weight to the base of your tripod if the wind is really bad. I tend to use my own body to try and shield my tripod from the wind which doesn’t always work. Another thing to remember is to catch a few exposures at a really fast shutter speed to make sure you have anything that will move ( ex. tree limbs, flowers, flags, etc..) in focus and perfectly still.

On a side note I really need to find some photography gloves!  If anyone out there has a suggestion on gloves drop me a comment or email me at nfirebaugh@gmail.com.
