Photo Share – Winter Stream

The weather has been cold lately here in Virginia for a few weeks with warm days here and there. I took the opportunity the cold weather brings and hiked up to the Cascades in Pembroke, VA for some winter photography. This was one I took along the way up to the water fall. You should visit the Cascades at any time of the year for a beautiful dose of nature.

Playing In The Ocean

This year during vacation I ventured out into the ocean about knee deep with my Induro Tripod and Canon 60D fitted with the 70-200mm and shot wave after wave as they rolled in. It was a lot of fun trying to capture both the beauty of nature and the power of the ocean. I tried many different shutter speeds from .5 second to 1/60th trying to blend both the motion and stopping time at that perfect moment. I found this to be very therapeutic and calming even though having your camera gear in the mighty ocean would have frightened me to death a few years ago.

Football Portraits

This year my son started a new sport Football so to bring in the new sport I shot a couple football portraits.  This one is a composite portrait meaning the subject was shot in a studio location on a white background and then the background was swapped out later in Photoshop.  I love shooting these things they are much different than my normal work! These allow me to mix the artistic backgrounds with a portrait, to create a one of a kind portrait.

For more information or if you’d like to have your own Sportrait session feel free to contact me.

This is a composite portrait shot in a studio setting adding the background in to complete the image. For more information contact me on my blog at www.nfirebaughimages.com

 4th Of July Fireworks

I spent the evening at the Salem Fair Fireworks show for the 4th of July photographing all of the beautiful lights and motion.  The setup I used for this photograph was my Canon 6D  with the 17-40mm F4L mounted on a Inudro tripod and I controlled the exposure with my Promote Control. Some of the problems you have to deal with in a situation like this is finding a balance between the lights of the rides and fair grounds and the fireworks. By using a manual shutter hold on the remote I could quickly look at the histogram and see immediately if I need to lengthen or shorten my exposure.

I also had a second camera setup Sony A6000 with the 16-50mm lens shooting a timelapse video using the Sony Timelapse App which can be found below.

The Old Mill – Pigeon Forge, TN

I had a quick visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park a few weeks back… more for relaxation than photography this time around. But I still had my gear with me and managed to shoot a few photographs during the trip. This is one of the Old Mill around sunset while a couple guys were fishing in the water below. The Old Mill is a really neat place to visit if you’re ever in Pigeon Forge Tennessee.

Chasing Waterfalls

I went out with a few photography friends yesterday to spend the day photographing a few waterfalls here in Virginia. Our first stop was at Crabtree Falls located in Nelson County, this set of falls is one to the tallest sets of waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The climb isn’t too bad even though the light we were working with didn’t allow us to hike to the very top. The trail is a pretty clean path and has railings to keep people off the dangerously slick rocks around the falls. I made my way out to a semi safe spot and took this shot looking away from the falls.
