Chasing Waterfalls

I went out with a few photography friends yesterday to spend the day photographing a few waterfalls here in Virginia. Our first stop was at Crabtree Falls located in Nelson County, this set of falls is one to the tallest sets of waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The climb isn’t too bad even though the light we were working with didn’t allow us to hike to the very top. The trail is a pretty clean path and has railings to keep people off the dangerously slick rocks around the falls. I made my way out to a semi safe spot and took this shot looking away from the falls.

Spring Macro Photography

In the spring I tend to use my Canon 100mm macro lens to death trying to capture every little bloom and bud in sight.  Spring macro photography has to be one of my favorite things about photography! Every year the same plants come and go but the photographs you take each year are always unique. This could be because of the subjects color or size difference each year or maybe you catch one of your subjects in the best light possible. That’s why I like shooting the same flowers and trees year after year.

This is one of my latest edits that I processed using a plugin called Topaz Restyle you can find my review of it here.  I took this shot using a Canon 60D and the Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro Lens handheld in aperture priority mode set at f2.8 and an ISO of 200. This combination of body and lens is an excellent setup for anyone looking to get into macro photography!

My New Favorite Camera Bag

I’ve had this bag for a few weeks now and I’ve given it a workout. So here’s how I have mine setup and my mini MindShift Panorama Review.  It fits comfortably and the rotation part works flawless. If you’re a landscape and nature photographer this is the bag!

My setup includes the upper photo insert which holds my Canon 6D with the 17-40mm mounted, a 50mm and my 70-200mm. In the rotational part I have a Canon 60D with the 100mm F2.8 macro mounted and some lens cleaning supplies. This allows me to hike or walk trails shoot handheld with the 60D until I get to a spot where I want to setup my tripod for landscape shots with the 6D. Your tripod mounts on the rear of the bag and they also have a tripod suspension kit if you prefer to carry it that way. It also has the compartment for a hydration bladder up to 3L on the left side and I store my gloves hats and snacks in the upper compartment.  Plenty of room but still not too big to weigh you down on a hike! It feels very sturdy and well constructed I would definitely recommend this bag to anyone who’s into adventure!

They offer this bag in two colors Tahoe Blue and Charcoal and there’s an optional rain cover for heavy downpours. (I took mine on a waterfall shoot a few weeks back and It did well keeping my gear dry without the rain cover.)

Photo Share – Signs Of Spring

Sometimes the simple things are often overlooked when out taking photographs. Often there are amazing photographs waiting to be taken right under your nose. Like this simple bloom I found on a tree today it could have been easily missed. I used a Canon 60D with a 100mm f2.8 macro lens to capture this image during the early morning light.
